One of the best ways that I protect the physical media (cds, dvds) that I buy is to create disk images of the media and then place the original media in a safe place. I then, place the disk images on a home network share and use them from there. The problem with this is that you need a way of opening the disk images for use. I've found Daemon Tools to be an imperfect (you have to say no to a lot of adware during the install) but very usable program for that task. It's comparable to Alcohol 120% but has the benefit of being free.

I was a diehard firefox fan until I started using this browser. It's not the right option for you if you need your browser plugins but if your ok with parting with adblock and greasemonkey, this is SOOOOO much faster than firefox. I love it. I really do.

Pidgin is a free, opensource multi-protocol instant messaging client. Got accounts on various instant messaging services? Pidgin can be loged into all of them at the same time and cut your number of buddy lists down to just one.

VLC is a free, cross-platform media player that basicly plays any format that ever existed. I personally love it.

Like VLC, 7-zip is a bit like a swiss-army knife. It's a free compression tool for windows that will open almost any format.

uTorrent is a very stable, exceptionally portable, torrent client. It is essential for uploading and downloading from torrent swarms.

Looking to convert any video format to any format without paying any money? WinFF is a very good option. "WinFF is a GUI for the command line video converter, FFMPEG. It will convert most any video file that FFmpeg will convert. WinFF does multiple files in multiple formats at one time." "WinFF is open source and cross platform written in Free Pascal and Lazarus. WinFF is published under the GNU public license."
