Next Gen Windows Mobile OS Shows Its Face

published on October 8th, 2006 . by joe

This basically just looks like a reskinned version of what’s out now.  I know this will shatter many people’s world view but I think Microsoft has a complete inability to innovate.

Windows Mobile 5 is the current OS of choice for Windows Mobile users however the next iteration, codenamed Crossbow, has shown its face, check out the full Pocket PC homescreen shown above! It has a glossy title bar and soft keys and will feature Vista-esque folder icons etc…

Windows Server Customers Now Allowed To Use Licence In Unlimited Virtual Machines

published on October 5th, 2006 . by joe

You would think this would just be common sense.

As of Oct 1, Windows Server Datacenter Edition operating system customers will have the right to run “an unlimted number of virtualized Windows Server instances.” This policy applies to licenses covering new servers and previous licenses upgraded with new version rights. All told, it means that you pay to run Windows Server Datacenter Edition on a server with a set number of processors and can then divvy that box up with any combination of Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition and/or Datacenter Edition without needing to count the number of virtual machines being created or pay for extra Windows Server licenses.

Microsoft to introduce extreme new anti-piracy measures in vista

published on October 5th, 2006 . by joe

I think this is just another situation where people who own legitimate copies will be the only people inconvenienced.  Pirates will find a way around Microsoft’s anti-piracy measures in about 10 minutes.

Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled anti-piracy plans for Windows Vista that take tougher measures against users of counterfeit software, including limiting protection against spyware and incapacitating the PC. Not everyone welcomed the measures.

Windows Vista, which Microsoft has said will ship to business customers in November and to consumers in January 2007, will be the first operating system to include technologies that the Redmond, Wash. developer called “Software Protection Platform.”

Under the new plan, counterfeit copies of Vista will not run the Aero interface, the OS’s much-touted updated graphics look; will disable ReadyBoost, a feature that lets users add memory to systems by plugging in a USB flash drive; and will cripple Windows Defender, the anti-spyware protection tucked inside Vista. Previously, Microsoft had said it would strip some features, including Aero, from non-genuine Vista, although Defender was not among those mentioned.

Run DOS and/or Windows on your Treo!

published on September 25th, 2006 . by joe

This is a good day.  Someone apparently ported DosBox to PalmOS.  If Palm ever releases another GSM treo, I’ll have to try this.

It doesn’t only emulate an x86 CPU but also a DOS environment, so you can’t install another x86 operating system. But you can run many DOS apps / games in this DOS environment, even Windows until 3.11 and maybe even Windows 95 / 98.
