I’m amazed. DailyTech is reporting that the Vista install DVD will include over 19,000 device drivers and windows updates will make another 11,000 drivers available. This could be very cool. No more hunting for disks (beyond the Vista disk). No more frequent visits to Dell’s driver download page. I still say Vista should NOT be installed for at least 6 months after release though.

This is an odd product. It’s a new command shell and dynamic scripting engine that can be added to XP or 2003. It’s currently not compatible with Vista.
I guess this is what used to be the MSH product that Microsoft pulled out of Vista after a vulnerability was found in it a year or two ago.
Bob Muglia, Microsoft’s vice president of servers and tools, announced today the official release of PowerShell, an interactive command shell and dynamic scripting engine designed to simplify automation and administrative tasks on the Windows platform. Built to leverage Microsoft’s .NET API, PowerShell exposes internal system functionality and gives system administrators more flexible mechanisms for manipulating Windows.

Forshame Bill! First you try to lock McAfee out of the antivirus market and now you flag your competitors’ products as virii. Not good. (Edit: Reported by Microsoft as false positive)
It seems that Microsoft has started flagging Gmail as a virus in their virus scanning software Windows Live OneCare. Many people are reporting that every time they open Gmail, a warning is displayed telling the user they are infected with “BAT/BWG.A”.

Microsoft admitted today on a company blog that Vista will not be immune to viruses and will need an antivirus utility installed. Well, no duh!
Windows Vista does require antivirus stoftware after all, Windows chief Jim Allchin wrote on a company blog.
“I want to be clear, most users will use some form of antivirus software, and that will be appropriate for their scenarios,” Allchin wrote.
The co-president of platform and services responded to media reports last week that quoted him as saying that the forthcoming operating system didn’t need any antivirus software because of it’s enhanced security. Allchin countered that the remarks were taken out of context.

Well, Microsoft announced today that they have released Vista to manufacturing. This means that it should be in the stores on January 30th. Please, take my advice. Do not install this as your primary operating system right away. It will break your system. This will be a security mess for at least the first 6 months. If you want to play with it and you have a beefy enough of a processor, run it in vmware. It’s safer.
With Vista, Microsoft promises increased security with an improved firewall and Windows Defender and User Account Control. Other fresh additions include integrated desktop search, Internet Explorer 7.0, Windows Sidebar, Windows Sideshow, built-in system diagnostics, improved gaming support, fully integrated Speech Recognition as well as support for Windows SuperFetch, Windows ReadyBoost and Windows ReadyDrive.
