Chart On Dell’s Website Shows Just How Crappy Vista Is

published on February 22nd, 2007 . by joe

It’s hilarious that Dell is this honest about how resource hungry Vista is.  I really need a 256mb graphics card for a large spreadsheet?  512mb of RAM is only good for booting the system but is not sufficient for running any programs or games?

Strip shows get new tax breaks in Amsterdam

published on February 20th, 2007 . by joe

An Amsterdam judge has ruled that peep shows — where sex workers performing strip shows and explicit acts can be watched from booths — are a form of theater and club owners are therefore entitled to a hefty tax break.

“Admitting customers to peep shows is equivalent to admitting them to a theater performance,” an Amsterdam Appeals Court judge wrote in a ruling late last month that was made public Tuesday. “The erotic character of the performance does not diminish that.”

Lead-laden lunchboxes OK’d by government

published on February 20th, 2007 . by joe

I would normally be the first to blame an industry lobbying group but how much power could lunchbox manufacturers have?

In 2005, when government scientists tested 60 soft, vinyl lunchboxes, they found that one in five contained amounts of lead that medical experts consider unsafe — and several had more than 10 times hazardous levels.

But that’s not what they told the public.

Instead, the Consumer Product Safety Commission released a statement that they found “no instances of hazardous levels.” And they refused to release their actual test results, citing regulations that protect manufacturers from having their information released to the public.

That data was not made public until The Associated Press received a box of about 1,500 pages of lab reports, in-house e-mails and other records in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed a year ago.

AnyDVD HD Now For Sale, Blu-Ray Beta On The Way

published on February 19th, 2007 . by joe

I am impressed.  I wasn’t expecting a commercial HD-DVD ripping program this early.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though.  Aggressive DRM schemes have always driven anti-DRM innovation.

AnyDVD HD comes with same functionality as AnyDVD, but with additional features for full HD-DVD (High Definition DVD) support, including decryption of HD-DVD movie discs.
Allows you to watch movies over a digital display connection, without HDCP compliant graphics card and HDCP compliant display. No need to buy an expensive monitor.
