McDonalds gives away malware infected mp3 players as prizes

published on October 15th, 2006 . by joe

It appears that McDonalds in Japan had a giveaway where the prize was an mp3 player infected with qqpass.  Why would McDonalds ever think they could get away with this??

In all 10,000 winners were announced and each got a Mac branded flash DAP preloaded with 10 tunes. However the MP3 players were infected with QQpass a very dangerous malware. So your PC is infected once you connect the DAP and it starts logging and transmitting username, passwords and other vital information. McDonalds Japan has apologized and set up a 24 hour helpline for those affected by the spyware loaded MP3 player.

DVD Jon Reverse Engineers Apple’s Fairplay

published on October 2nd, 2006 . by joe

This is cool.  Jon Lech Johansen (AKA DVD Jon) hasn’t just cracked fairplay.  He reverse engineered it.  What does this mean?  He could now license the technology to companies who make their media files compatible with the iPod among other things.

He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Apple’s devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something he’s already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.
Jon Lech Johansen became famous for hacking encrypted DVDs so they would play in Linux when he was 15, making him the target of criminal charges for which he was eventually acquitted. Last year he moved from Norway to San Diego to1 work for Michael Robertson2. But the work — a digital locker for music — didn’t captivate Johansen, so he struck out on his own at the beginning of the summer.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.4.8

published on October 1st, 2006 . by joe

Apple on Friday pushed what is likely the second-to-last update to Mac OS X 10.4, code-named “Tiger.” The update includes several fixes to printing, Finder and Apple applications and networking, as well as several third-party fixes among other modifications.
The company said that on Intel-based Macs, the update would require two restarts, but did not specify the cause. PowerPC-based systems would require a single restart.
